INTERVIEW...

cont. from p. 9

thing new. By 1965 or 1966, John and I were using the word gay as differentiated from the word homosexual. We were already thinking of gay as having to do with spiritual, mental and emotional. qualities of which the sexual was an important part and the gateway, but only the gateway. It was the entry through which we could walk into a whole world unto itself.

After 1969, there was a lot of enthusiasm, defiance, anger, and a lot of grass roots development. When did we start....

Hay:...to slip?

Burnside: What happened in 1969 had been prepared for by the peace movement, the civil rights movement-there was a migration over into the gay movement of a lot of gay people who had been buried in the leftist movements of the Sixties. The people who came into the gay movement from the radical organizations-remember, Harry, we observed this with a great deal of concern...

Hay:There were lots of kids who came out of the Students for a Democratic Society who had been thinking just as I had so long ago that leftists were compatible people who might one day. become interested in my liberation-of course I was quite mistaken. The people from S.D.S. found out the same thing. Consequently, they had to move another. step in their own personal direction.

Burnside: But when they came from the radical left, these people who had not even a shred of an idea about the old traditions of what being gay had meant sort of stunned us. They came without. any humor, with dogmatism, and we thought, "Who are these people?" We couldn't even recognize them. They had no camp, no wit...they were lousy in bed. So that was one of the shocks to the homophile movement. Now the injection of the whole matter of civil rights was a distortion of the earlier homophile movement which was much more spiritually oriented.
